Caribbean Culture for Kids

\

Ahhhh I am so happy to be doing a part two. Thank you for being here. If you make it to the end, you’re the real ting!

St Vincent and The Grenadines

Here is how we celebrated:

We made bakes.

(A fried dumpling that is a staple in SVG.)

We made a sea turtle craft.

(There is a Turtle Sanctuary in SVG that I hope to take my kids to one day soon.)

Here is what you’ll need for the craft:

Scissors

Construction Paper

Glue

Goggley Eyes/ Marker

Dominican Republic

Here’s how we celebrated:

We read Your Mama, by NoNiequa Ramos

We learned what the musical instrument guira is.

We made our own merengue band.

We made mantecaditos, Dominican butter cookies.

We also tried Mofongo for the first time. It's like plantains in yummy, mashed potato form.

Here is what you’ll need:

Empty Cans

Rice

Balloons

Scissors

Pencils (Something to bang with.)

You can fill them with rice and pretend they’re maracas. Hit them and pretend they are drums. If you rub the sides, pretend they are guiras.

Puerto Rico

We ate Puerto Rican empanadas, which the kids loved.

We listened to Parrots over Puerto Rico on Youtube read aloud.

We also read Parrot with a Hat, Michael Buxton. (Here is a parrot craft we did in part one.)

Cuba

We read All the Way to Havana by Margarita Engle.

We made a sugar cane craft.

Here is what you’ll need:

Paper Towel Roll

Construction Paper

Yellow & Brown Paint

Scissors

Jamaica

We ate jerk chicken and patties.

We read A Story about Afiya, by James Berry. It was probably my favorite of the week.

We learned a bit about Bob Marley in part one if you want to check it out.

Here are the fun breakfast ideas to go with the celebration.

Cheers to you, and cheers to a vibrant culture!

XO,
