Caribbean American Heritage Month for Kids

I’m thrilled to share some Caribbean American culture this month. I found zero blogs showing some cultural activities for little ones, so hopefully this helps. I am proudly Vincentian American. It is vital to showcase and celebrate all cultures in a world of clump. Let’s not bury the things that make us beautifully diverse.

First up, Bob Marley, the Jamaican singer that changed the world. It really goes without saying his impact on our culture is one of the most influential. This book is adapted from his song, Three Little Birds.

My friend Bonnie shares inclusive children's books. She compiled this list, and it highlights so many Caribbean countries. If you were in search of a book, please check out her list!

I took the bird theme and ran with it. Here is our St. Vincent and the Grenadines national bird. The St. Vincent amazon, a stunning parrot, in which our flag colors are drawn from.

(The St. Vincent amazon is found ONLY in St. Vincent and the Grenadines.)

Here's what you'll need for the crafts:

Cardboard

Glue

Pipe Cleaners

Paint

Scissors

Construction Paper

We cut out the parrots on cardboard. My babies and I painted/pasted them. Then we glued them to the branch. Voila, three little birds, Vincy style.

Next, we are celebrating Haitian Americans. I was drawn to this book by the lively colors. One thing about Caribbeans, we love color!

This is the sweetest story about how the tap tap, a taxi service, connects people to things/places in their life, but also each other.

Making your own tap tap and talking about Haitian American culture is a wonderful way to introduce little ones.

WEB Du Bois was a civil rights activist, who is Haitian American. I also took time to introduce my kids to his legacy. Here is the YouTube video we watched, and they offer a free coloring page.

Here is a children's book that speaks to who W.E.B. was.

The easiest way to admire Caribbean American culture is in cuisine. We have the best food in the world. From the tropical fruits to the entrees the flavors will impress even the pickiest palates.

This blog is getting long, so come back Friday for part two!

XO,
